Many organizations are approaching return on investment for AI backwards. They deploy the technology first and try to quantify value afterward.

However, companies seeing the greatest returns take a different approach. They begin by defining the business outcomes they want to achieve, then redesign workflows to support those goals. Rather than focusing on the technology itself, they start by asking questions about business processes, employee experiences and organizational priorities.

When AI is aligned to measurable business outcomes, it becomes much easier to demonstrate value and justify continued investment.

A McKinsey state of AI report found that, “Responses suggest that for most organizations, the use of AI has not yet significantly affected enterprise-wide EBIT. Thirty-nine percent of respondents attribute any level of EBIT impact to AI, and most of those respondents say that less than 5 percent of their organization’s EBIT is attributable to AI use.”¹
