CrossWinds, a rural Kansas mental health center, was plagued by prolonged downtime, an antiquated and slow network, lack of remote access, and an outdated and under-managed telephone system. Things reached a breaking point when their network went down for four days and services ground to an abrupt halt at their 17 locations. After realizing that they didn't have a firm grasp on the scope and capabilities of their on-premises IT network, CrossWinds turned to mindSHIFT, a Ricoh company, to help them understand the full breadth of the situation.

"When we first went down, I knew we needed a larger vendor to come in and build our network the right way."

Rob Runquist
Chief Executive Officer
CrossWinds Counseling and Wellness in East Central Kansas

During an internet search for outsource providers to replace in-house managed IT, CrossWinds came upon mindSHIFT. We quickly assembled a multi-state team of our IT experts to conduct an in-depth onsite assessment of the existing IT infrastructure, and to recommended ways to fix and monitor the network.

After a thorough assessment, the path forward was clear. mindSHIFT migrated CrossWinds from on-premise IT management run by internal staff to a private cloud strategy with outsourced management. By hosting all of their current services in our cloud environment, we could stabilize the network and prevent frequent downtime.

The solution also included:

  • Cloud servers and Tier 3 application monitoring and backup to keep information flowing, retrievable and secured.
  • Virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) that enables staff to seamlessly work in the field with their company-issued device.
  • Analysis of data circuits for all CrossWinds' sites and replacement of intermittent connectivity with highly reliable Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) circuits.
  • A mindSHIFT cloudSHIFT VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) solution to dramatically improve telephone technology.
  • Dedicated mindSHIFT helpdesk, account manager, technical consultant and primary engineer.

Moving forward, mindSHIFT will help CrossWinds implement a SharePoint® intranet site so employees can access and share policies and procedures anytime, anywhere.

About CrossWinds Counseling and Wellness

CrossWinds, serving seven rural Kansas counties for 50 years, has experienced significant changes in recent years. Formerly the Mental Health Center of East Central Kansas, they have a new name, a fresh logo and new facilities to provide mental health services to children and adults. They also brought in a new CEO to create a framework to turn CrossWinds into a modern healthcare organization with positive cash flow and high levels of patient satisfaction.

Crosswinds now has a much more efficient, well-rounded approach to their IT network, allowing staff to focus on their mission of providing flexible, patient-oriented care. Crosswinds' IT department has been transformed from a cost center to a partnership that supports its business objectives. Implementing VDI provided significant workflow advantages for staff working outside the office. The switch to MPLS circuits replaced intermittent connectivity with a reliable connection for both the cloud strategy and VoIP technology. And a forklift upgrade of the phone system — performing the upgrade in tandem with the cloud and circuit installations — realized a savings of more than $100,000 for CrossWinds.

"Our network issues affected all of us — patients and staff. We feel a lot more secure knowing we won't be off network for days," said Amanda Cunningham, Chief Operating Officer at CrossWinds.
