IDC MarketScape names top print security providers

Technologies including mobile and cloud-based workflows are changing the way businesses work with business-critical content. Businesses require 24 x 7 access to information from both inside and outside the corporate firewall.

However, all networks are vulnerable to cyber-security threats. According to the International Data Corporation (IDC), when it comes to effectively protecting against persistent threats and hack attacks, many organizations are lagging behind.

"Despite measures taken to protect IT infrastructure, the lack of visibility and oversight within the print environment creates a weak link that leaves organizations vulnerable to hackers and other cyber-security threats."

Robert Palmer Research Director, Imaging, Printing, and Document Solutions group IDC

To examine the solutions available to help organizations protect their mission-critical data, the IDC MarketScape Study analyzed 10 major providers and their ability to deliver security solutions and services in both managed print and document services (MPDS) engagements and non-MPDS professional and managed services.

Focus of the study

IDC defines security as "solutions and services to address security, including device-level features and capabilities, software solutions, or professional and managed services with core competencies in threat-level assessment, detection, and remediation capabilities."

The study evaluated both device-level endpoint security and protection of data/content. In particular, researchers looked for capabilities such as:

  • Security solutions portfolio, device-level features, managed and professional services
  • Core competencies in threat-level assessment, detection and risk remediation
  • Roadmap for specific end-user challenges related to securing the print and document infrastructure
  • Ability to help customers achieve and sustain security compliance and meet industry standards
  • Consistent operational and service delivery excellence on a local, regional and global basis
  • Expansion into new geographic territories, vertical industries and line-of-business (LOB) applications
  • Flexible service delivery, pricing and billing models
  • Support for on-premises, private and public cloud offerings
  • Remote, BYOD and mobile printing
  • User authentication, authorization and password management
  • Device management, antivirus and malware protection
  • Privacy and data integrity for hardware and software
  • Security assessments and audits
