Case Study: Alphagraphics Kansas City, Missouri

See how Alphagraphics regained its edge with more consistent color output

The Kansas City, Missouri location of Alphagraphics, a printing and design company, runs a very tight operation, calibrating color daily to ensure consistency. As business grew, staff began to notice the printer (under lease from a Ricoh competitor) wasn’t keeping pace despite the supplier saying color output was within spec. The delays began to take a toll on the business in the form of wasted time and lost customers.

The owners met the Ricoh production team at various industry events. Initially, they didn’t entertain a switch because they were under lease with a competitor’s printer. But once their machine starting to cause so many issues, the owners asked the Ricoh team to “make us an offer we can’t refuse.”

"We really enjoyed working with Ricoh. It’s a very different experience from our previous color printer supplier. The Ricoh team is made up of straight shooters who are very good at answering our questions and not beating around the bush."

After our assessment, we discovered that their machine was better suited to meet the demands of an office environment instead of a production facility. Although it was possible to calibrate the machine to meet those demands, doing so would just lead to additional waste and unnecessary delays.

Because of their strict color standards and high output demands, we recommended the RICOH Pro C901 Graphic Arts + color production printer as a replacement. This workhorse provided:

  • Document assembly.
  • Variable data printing.
  • EFI (TM) Fiery® print controller for advanced color and job management.
  • Oil-free imaging technology.

And to demonstrate our faith in our solution, we even bought out the final year of Alphagraphic’s existing lease with the competitor.

After installing the new machine, efficiency is up, waste is down and color is consistent.

Some of the improvements include job time reduction from two hours to 45 minutes, the ability to determine the exact PMS match of a color on a photograph using the ES2000 densitometer, and machines programmed with current paper stock specs. With these successes, as well as our understanding of the needs of a company that has a high print volume, Alphagraphics feels they now have the right printer — and the right partner — in place.
