Windows 9x/Me:

[Start] - [Settings] - [Control Panel] - [Device Manager] - [CD-ROM];
Double click your drive item on the [Settings] tab;
The dialogue that appears shows the firmware version.

Windows 2000/XP:

Check the firmware version using your writing software, which will have an option for a writer information, including the firmware version.
