Ricoh Americas Corporation today unveiled major improvements to its water-, dust- and shock-resistant camera, which includes an innovative barcode reading capability that helps streamline workflows across a wide range of industries.

The new Wi-Fi- and Bluetooth-enabled RICOH G800SE enables dynamic information capture in industries such as automotive, logistics, government, healthcare, emergency services and more. For example, a car dealership can scan the barcode on a new car, photograph the vehicle, and have the photograph and vehicle information flow directly to the dealership website for customers to see. This new workflow saves hours of painstaking information retrieval and organization. With a standard camera, clerks would need to manually match images to each car, introducing the possibility of error at every step.

“By embedding critical data into images, the RICOH G800SE epitomizes information mobility, the ability for employees to access just the information they need in the form they need it to make important decisions,” said Matt Sakauchi, Vice President, Technology Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “This is just one way we’re making customers’ business information work for them in this new world of work.”

The RICOH G800SE includes a host of upgrades over the previous generation of ruggedized Ricoh wireless-enabled camera, the RICOH G700SE. For example, a higher-resolution image sensor provides a new ability to capture images under low-light conditions. The RICOH G800SE also takes advantage of higher wireless transmission speeds and the more secure “enterprise” Wi-Fi increasingly seen in healthcare facilities and government agencies. It leverages the Protected Extensible Authentication Protocol (PEAP), an emerging standard in enterprise wireless security.

A flexible password lock feature enables organizations to create separate passwords for administrators and users with each one unlocking different sets of permissions. A smartphone connection enables users to remotely operate the camera via their mobile devices. Using a smartphone or tablet, they can preview, zoom, shoot and capture image data, including GPS position. The capability is ideal for surveillance applications.

Organizations can manage fleets of RICOH G800SE cameras via remote management software with the ability to upgrade firmware, adjust camera settings and update memo functions. An alternative for camera configuration is distributing SD cards with prescribed settings.

Like its predecessor, the RICOH G800SE includes a powerful memo capability that enables users to record up to 20 text or voice information fields as memos embedded in the photo file. The camera is available without wireless and GPS functions as the RICOH G800. An optional laser barcode scanning feature on the G800SE speeds reading of barcodes and enables reading in dark places.

Manufacturer’s retail price is $725 for the RICOH G800 and $960 for the RICOH G800SE.

Ricoh Americas Corporation today announced it has expanded its partnership with Fujitsu America, Inc., offering Ricoh customers a new, broader range of Fujitsu technologies to foster information mobility in the new world of work.

Ricoh, already a partner of Fujitsu, will now offer the company’s storage, servers and end-user devices as part of its comprehensive IT Services. Fujitsu offers cost-effective solutions, which help customers move data more rapidly so they can effectively compete in today’s fast-paced, dynamic work environment.

The expanded partnership is of particular interest to customers in healthcare, a strength of Fujitsu. The company’s tablet PCs are used by many clinicians, and all of its products support the move to electronic health records. In addition to tablets, Ricoh will offer Fujitsu notebooks to customers.

“For organizations that wish to improve the performance of their information, Ricoh and Fujitsu together are a powerful combination, leveraging the best in technology and talent,” said Douglas Besselman, director of Enterprise Channel Sales, Fujitsu America, Inc. “Together, we’re helping customers overcome the most difficult challenges facing IT today.”

Ricoh IT Services include design and implementation of networks and IT infrastructure, as well as support and remediation, all designed to help clients focus on core competencies and strategic initiatives.

Ricoh Americas Corporation today announced a new series of monochrome printers and multifunction products (MFPs) featuring All-In-One print cartridge technology and Wi-Fi Protected Setup (WPS) – a security standard that helps users easily secure a wireless network.

“With simplified Wi-Fi connectivity you can skip the cables, connections and complicated instructions, and begin printing to your new device in just a few steps,” said Matt Sakauchi, Vice President, Technology Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “Such simplicity is integral to our mission of delivering information mobility in the new world of work.”

Wi-Fi connectivity complements traditional Ethernet and direct USB 2.0 connection modes in the versatile, 23-page-per-minute RICOH SP 213SNw/SP 213SFNw black-and-white laser MFP and RICOH SP 213Nw black-and-white laser printer. Ideal for small businesses and home offices, the series also includes a range of sustainability features, and an expansive array of fonts.

Features that can help customers meet their sustainability goals include manual duplex, a recyclable All-In-One print cartridge, minimal warmup time, and N-up printing and copying to place several pages of information on a single sheet to save paper. Paperless fax capability captures inbound faxes in memory and forwards them to an email address or to a network folder, enabling users to print only the ones they want. Users can also fax directly from their PCs, saving even more paper.

The RICOH SP 213 series employs a powerful 360 MHz PCL print controller with 128 MB RAM and 80 resident PCL fonts for creative printing in many styles. The series’ fanless design helps keep the printers and MFPs especially quiet.

The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the RICOH SP 213Nw laser printer is $145. The MSRP for the RICOH SP 213SNw (scan, print, copy) is $195, and the SP 213SFNw (scan, print, copy, fax) is $245.

“Don’t trust anyone over 30” captured the essence of the Generation Gap in the 1960s, when college students mobilized to set a bold new tone in American culture.

Echoes of that intergenerational tension resonate in today’s U.S. workplace as many younger workers question older colleagues’ competence and many older workers question younger workers’ commitment. Some call it Generation Gap 2.0.

• Nearly 7 in 10 workers (69 percent) say younger workers are frustrating when it comes to work ethic.
• Nearly half of workers (48 percent) say the younger employees usually have to help older ones at their place of employment use technology.
• When workers are asked to identify which generations make the best mentors, they generally choose their own generation. In fact, those 18-34 (27 percent) are three times as likely as those ages 35-44 (8 percent), 45-54 (4 percent) and 55-64 (5 percent) to cite Gen Y (also known as Millennials) as the best.

These are among the findings in a new Ricoh Americas Corporation survey of more than 1,000 working adults (aged 18+) conducted online in August by Harris Poll on behalf of Ricoh.

“Although Generation Gap 2.0 doesn’t pervade the culture like the original generation gap did, it’s no less a real phenomenon,” said Terrie Campbell, Vice President, Strategic Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “It’s more of an undercurrent, a subtext, and definitely something business leaders need to manage. It has serious implications for teams, employee training and mentor relationships.”

Generation Gap 2.0 is partially the result of different formative experiences. Gen Yers have never known a world without the Internet; rather, the Internet is inseparable from their “real world.” For older workers, the Internet is perceived as a layer of experience that augments a real world that often seems more meaningful. Likewise, for younger workers, digital communications are as natural and valid as face-to-face conversations. For older workers, digital communications are often seen as an inadequate, or worse, frustrating substitute for face-to-face interactions. On top of these differences are the perennial variations in the world views of people in different phases of their lives.

Probing assumptions
Nonetheless, it’s unclear how warranted the negative generational stereotypes are. For instance, could younger generations be more committed to their work than they appear? Staying late in the office, for example, is classic Boomer “proof” of a strong work ethic. But it may seem an empty gesture to Gen Y, since 24/7 mobile and home connectivity make it easy to take your work home with you. And, of course, work/life boundaries have blurred: the 9-to-5 workday just isn’t the institution it used to be.

And what about the criticism of older generations? Could their technology shortcomings be overblown? By many accounts, Boomers are less immersed in new technology than younger workers.(1) But might older workers simply have a different sense of the value of face time and off-screen interactions? Is it possible that younger people are too immersed in their digital world?

“Boomers and Gen Y clearly have different world views, but we need to be cautious in how we evaluate workstyles,” said Campbell. “Perhaps a highly-functioning workplace functions best with a mix of workstyles, much as a winning baseball team needs a mix of good pitchers, hitters and fielders.”

Addressing the gap
Diverse world views, workstyles and definitions of “work day” spotlight the need for organizations to focus on developing information mobility. This capability helps employees (regardless of generation or workstyle) access the precise business information they need, in the ideal form on the right device, to complete the task at hand.

“We recommend companies take a hard look at whether their business information is working for employees of every workstyle,” said Campbell. “At the same time, companies should configure their mentorship and training programs with generational differences in mind. They need to ensure that older workers have a comfort level with using technology effectively and that younger workers develop the people skills that previous generations have valued. There’s a lot for employees to learn from one another.”

Ricoh has addressed Generation Gap 2.0 in its own business with a Generational Council. The multigenerational internal committee formally examines workplace challenges and opportunities related to generational differences in workstyle. The council exemplifies Ricoh’s belief that every organization can turn generational differences into a strength that can enhance, rather than harm, its overall performance. Learn more about this and other recent surveys.

Methodology: This survey was conducted online within the United States between August 1-5, 2014 among 2,014 adults ages 18 and older (of whom 1,034 are employed full time, part time, or self-employed) by Harris Poll on behalf of Ricoh via its Quick Query Omnibus product. Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, region and household income were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. Propensity score weighting was used to adjust for respondents’ propensity to be online.

Ricoh Americas Corporation today unveiled Ricoh Meeting Room Services, enabling companies to more efficiently use conference rooms and curb the expense of unused spaces.

Offices spend $20,000 a year or more on their meeting rooms, but these rooms are empty nearly half of the time.(1,2)That means companies are spending too much money on space that isn’t being used. Ricoh Meeting Room Services, which incorporate market-leading technology from Condeco, address this inefficiency with an intelligent solution that minimizes “no-shows” by using ID sign-in technology and sensors to report occupancy rates and patterns in real-time.

“We hate to see companies wasting money on unused space,” said Tim Vellek, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “With Ricoh Meeting Room Services, we’re giving them more information about how they’re using their rooms, when peak periods occur, how to be more efficient, and how to get more value from existing real estate.”

Combining Ricoh’s service expertise with Condeco’s technology, Ricoh Meeting Room Services provide information mobility for facilities, operations and office managers. The services capture real-time room usage data, analyze patterns, and re-engineer optimization plans to help balance occupancy rates and drive measurable cost savings. Ricoh Meeting Room Services can help companies manage an entire meeting room inventory via the Condeco software solution for booking meeting space, inviting attendees, reserving audiovisual equipment, ordering meals and activating electronic signage.

Beginning with an expert assessment, Ricoh communication consultants work directly with customers to meet their specific needs. Ricoh Meeting Room Services can incorporate other Ricoh solutions, including digital projector systems, interactive whiteboards, video conferencing and paperless meeting services. After design and implementation, Ricoh will help ensure objectives are met and drive continuous optimization.

“Meeting room optimization is a matter of streamlining information workflow, which is Ricoh’s core mission and the main capability of the technology we’ve provided for the solution,” said Martin Brooker, COO of Condeco. “This partnership gives companies access to Ricoh’s personalized service experience from the beginning, helping them continuously optimize their meeting rooms to make the most of their implementation.”

While managers oversee room usage, individual employees can swipe their ID cards or enter PIN codes at any meeting room door to book the space on the fly, manage no-shows, begin meetings and release rooms at the end of the session. For further precision, wireless sensors can be added to remotely track actual room utilization.

The first fruits of the partnership were on display today at EDUCAUSE as Ricoh demonstrated a new ability to scan paper documents on a multifunction product (MFP) and have them automatically flow to a student or faculty member’s Blackboard Learn account via Ricoh’s Integrated Cloud Environment (ICE). The demonstration included ultra-simple printing of content from that environment as well (printing on campuses is far more complicated than people realize or than it needs to be, in Ricoh’s view). As the leader in information mobility, Ricoh is committed to giving students and faculty the right information in the right form at the right time and place.

“Our work with Ricoh will seamlessly extend the Blackboard learning environment to the world of hard copy capture and distribution while preserving the signature fluidity of our technology,” said Kathleen Vieira, Vice President, Business Development, Blackboard. “The goal is a streamlined experience and, as always, a sharp focus on learning results.”

Ricoh Americas Corporation today announced its new RICOH TotalFlow Path workflow solution – a hardware-agnostic offering designed to intelligently connect multiple production print processes, ultimately increasing automation. It allows printers to redefine workflows; merge stages of the print process, including applications such as web-to-print, pre-press, print management etc.; and enable information to flow swiftly and easily while keeping overall operating costs low. Part of the RICOH TotalFlow portfolio, which includes TotalFlow Production Manager, TotalFlow Print Manager, TotalFlow Prep and TotalFlow BatchBuilder, TotalFlow Path will support new hardware solutions like the RICOH Pro C9100/9110 series and the RICOH Pro C7100 series, as well as other legacy Ricoh production print offerings.

TotalFlow Path enables printers to streamline the workflow process to help improve communications, reduce errors and decrease costs. It can communicate, integrate and automate printers’ workflow systems seamlessly, thus minimizing the number of tasks required to complete a job and increasing productivity. By leveraging JDF (Job Definition Format) job ticketing, printers can customize rules for every job or simply emulate previous successful jobs. In addition, fixed rules that apply conditional logic to unique tasks can be implemented to help ensure the right person always has the right information to make the most informed print decisions for an organization.

“As many of today’s print shops look to decrease their technology total cost of ownership, it is key that they have workflow solutions that enable communications to run smoothly without ultimately increasing costs,” said John Fulena, Director of Professional Services and Solutions Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “We looked to design a solution that would provide the same benefits of automating manual tasks for better information flow, reducing errors and increasing production that other automation systems offered, but without the hefty price tag – ultimately allowing our customers to set up an effective workflow system at a technology cost that meets their budget needs.”

TotalFlow Path’s open architecture gives printers seeking to integrate disparate technologies across their environment the ability to connect different processes and products from different vendors. It also enables the creation of custom integrations to meet print and communication needs. Built in software extensions for the solution include, but are not limited to:

• Hot folder input – Monitors folders for the arrival of new jobs. The folders can be local on the server or shared folders on a different system. A job can be set as a PDF file, in which case a user-defined ticket is applied, or a JDF file can be the job ticket and a PDF file the job resource.
• JDF input/JDF output – Receives jobs from JDF-enabled sources and submits jobs to JDF-enabled applications and devices.
• Order submission tool – Allows the user to ticket and submit jobs directly to TotalFlow Path, implementing new levels of efficiency and control.
• TotalFlow Prep – Improves execution of TotalFlow Path’s automatic pre-press tasks, getting jobs ready to go sooner.
• TotalFlow Print Manager/TotalFlow Production Manager – Allows job submittal to a TotalFlow Print Manager or TotalFlow Production Manager server. Captures relevant indexing information automatically.
• Approval – Provides the ability to approve jobs either manually or by email. Allows defining email templates to be used for approvals.
• Email notification – Allows submitting notifications regarding a job by email. Allows defining email templates to be used.
• Hot folder application – Allows integration with external applications through hot folders. Job files placed to a specified folder from the external application waits for the return file in a specified folder, helping to ensure documents are always where they need to be.
• Manual tasks – Allows for custom tasks to be handled by an operator.
• Offline devices – Handles offline devices and records the results, which can be monitored for efficiency and adjusted accordingly.
• File output – Places jobs in a user-defined output folder, allowing customization and special-case adjustments.
• RICOH Pro C901 Graphic Arts+, RICOH Pro C651EX and RICOH Pro C751, all with EFI Fiery Controllers – Allows job submittal to these printers. Captures media catalog information automatically.

In addition, TotalFlow Path can integrate with partnered solutions through optional extensions. These include: PTI MarcomCentral, PTI FusionPro Producer, Objectif Lune PlanetPress, RSA WebCRD, EFI Fiery, Enfocus PitStop Server, Avanti Slingshot, Ultimate Impostrip OnDemand Automation.

This award is recognition of their efforts in the area of MFPs. An award could easily be given to this company for what they have built in the way of a highly competitive production print capability. From every aspect we can think of no other company has upgraded, over the last three years, their product offering as dramatically as Ricoh has.”

Ricoh Americas’ Senior Vice President of Marketing Tim Vellek will accept the award on behalf of Ricoh. The distinction is given based on responses to THE CANNATA REPORT’s 29th Annual Dealer Survey, where over 275 dealers provided feedback on which manufacturer they believe offers the best multifunction products (MFPs). For the first time in the report’s 29-year history CANNATA had four dealers reporting revenues in excess of $100 million and 11 percent of the respondents stating that their total revenues were in excess of $30 million.

“This honor from THE CANNATA REPORT for a second year demonstrates that our dealers, as well as our customers, agree that Ricoh is successfully making information work for them through continued product innovation,” said Vellek. “We are proud of this achievement as it is a result of our ongoing commitment to our dealers.”

Since workers aren’t robots, 100-percent productivity (whatever that means) is impossible. But what can companies realistically expect of their employees now that summer vacations are over?

Well, plenty of distractions, according to a new Ricoh Americas Corporation online survey of more than 1,000 employed adults in the U.S. conducted by Harris Poll on behalf of Ricoh this past August.

Three out of 4 workers (76 percent) check personal email, 3 out of 5 (61 percent) take personal calls, and 2 out of 3 (67 percent) text using a mobile phone at least once a week while on the job, according to the survey. Approximately 1 in 3 (35 percent) employees post to their social media accounts and even play games (34 percent) on a weekly basis.

Although few would propose a blanket ban on personal email and phone calls, given that some messages can be urgent, the numbers suggest workers are spending some amount of time … well, not working.

“We’re facing a Connectivity Conundrum,” says Terrie Campbell, Vice President, Strategic Marketing at Ricoh Americas Corporation. “We need to be connected to electronic resources for our work, which gives us a tremendous ability to achieve great things. But the flipside is we’re a click away from alluring distractions like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Hollywood gossip and Angry Birds.”

Work vs. ‘life’: what’s the right balance?
The Connectivity Conundrum threatens to undermine companies’ hard-won information mobility, a state where the precise business information employees need is instantly accessible wherever and whenever it’s required to conquer the challenge at hand. Unproductive time breeds information gridlock, enabling competitors to seize an advantage.

The Connectivity Conundrum is especially acute for digital natives new to the workforce. Workers ages 18-34 are nearly twice as likely to post to social media account(s) as those ages 35-64 (49 percent vs. 28 percent, respectively) and play games (50 percent vs. 25 percent) at least weekly.
What changed?
Indulging in distractions is yet another symptom of the disappearing boundary between work and “life.” Rightly or wrongly, we’re seeing a collective rebalancing to offset work demanded of us on nights, weekends and vacations.

“Not so long ago, most workers assiduously avoided taking personal calls during work hours unless it was during their lunch hour and away from their desk,” says Campbell. “But times have clearly changed. If you’re expected to be ‘on call’ during your personal time, it’s not outrageous to take a call from a friend or family member during work hours. The firewall between work and life has crumbled, so it’s understandable that personal affairs have seeped into work time just as work affairs have seeped into personal time. From a productivity standpoint, you could think of gaming at work as the evil twin of working on your vacation.”

Other explanations
Or perhaps it’s just gotten easier to yield to temptation. A PC and smartphone can be considered work devices to be sure, but when you’re tapping away on them no one really knows if you’re switching between writing a winning sales letter or checking the picture you were just tagged in.

Another factor is the movement of both parents into the workforce. When all family adults are working, someone’s got to deal with the myriad details of children and aging parents. In general, these responsibilities can no longer be handled at home.

“Embracing distractions might also be an attempt to recharge mental batteries throughout the day,” says Campbell. “For instance, you may be on a lengthy conference call and check Facebook mainly to keep yourself awake. But games on the job? That stat was something of a surprise.”

Addressing the problem
Below are some suggested approaches companies can take to contend with the Connectivity Conundrum:

• Don’t pretend it’s not happening – Begin an open dialogue on distractions by at least acknowledging their existence and the challenge of staying focused.
• Set expectations – Workers look for guidelines. Clarify your performance expectations while defining your understanding of the work/life balance.
• Measure results – Rather than focusing on rooting out distractions and measuring compliance, configure workers’ goals around results. If they’re expected to assemble 500 widgets a day, and they reach that goal, it may not matter how they allocate their time.
• Improve your culture – Create a working culture as appealing as the distractions. Make work fun, and ensure everyone is challenged and stimulated. Evenly distribute the appealing work as well as the drudgery.

Methodology: This survey was conducted online within the United States between August 1-5, 2014 among 2,014 adults ages 18 and older, of whom 1,034 are employed full time, part time, or self-employed by Harris Poll (via its QuickQuery Omnibus product) on behalf of Ricoh. Figures for age, sex, race/ethnicity, education, region and household income were weighted where necessary to bring them into line with their actual proportions in the population. Propensity score weighting was used to adjust for respondents’ propensity to be online.

Ricoh Americas Corporation today announced its 2014 MUST SEE ‘EMS award-winning RICOH TotalFlow BatchBuilder. This new, industry-first software solution simplifies and automates the batching and scheduling of short-run digital work for centralized job control. The vendor-neutral offering empowers users seeking better ways to meet production demands from high volumes of short-run and on demand jobs, while minimizing labor costs, increasing efficiency and throughput, and more effectively managing jobs.

As commercial printers, publishing printers, in-plants, franchise printers, and service bureaus grapple with these types of jobs, which typically require time-consuming hands-on management, they are faced with increasing costs in time and money. Commercial printers in particular often have multiple digital device installations from different vendors and need software that can pull jobs together from all of them. TotalFlow BatchBuilder software is the industry’s only standalone solution to these problems. It provides users with an open platform for disparate submission methods and scheduling based on pre-defined responses to job attributes. This approach streamlines job ticketing, scheduling, routing and finishing with an ultimate goal of increasing printers’ efficiency and revenues.

At Ricoh’s GRAPH EXPO #1931 booth, visitors can see TotalFlow BatchBuilder producing batches of bound books, cut-and-stack business cards, folded brochures and more.

“The printing industry is experiencing a number of shifts and one of the most evident trends is increasing client demand for more short-run and on demand jobs. These types of jobs offer users new business opportunities, but also hinder how efficiently work gets done,” said John Fulena, Director, Professional Services and Solutions Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “TotalFlow BatchBuilder addresses this difficulty by harnessing the information in jobs to automatically and intelligently group and produce similar jobs. With this solution, users can successfully capitalize on this industry shift, rather than be overwhelmed by it.”

TotalFlow BatchBuilder enables printers to:
• Streamline job ticketing, scheduling, routing and finishing by organizing incoming orders from multiple sources and batching jobs based on more than 100 customizable fields
• Automate job submission from MIS, web-to-print portals, homegrown platforms and prepress systems to TotalFlow BatchBuilder via XML or JDF
• Track volume of work based on criteria such as number of jobs, sheets or run time
• Manage orders and bring jobs back together after they have been split and printed in different batches for tracking and shipping purposes
• Manage batches by defining output device-specific criteria and routing batches manually, automatically or semi-automatically
• Control all jobs in their multi-vendor printing environment, including high-speed digital inkjet and cutsheet devices. The solution is hardware agnostic and designed to be flexible to meet the demands of the typical print environment. It can also assist with roll management of continuous feed devices
• View all work based on job properties through an intuitive web-based GUI
• Open, view and download PDF files
• Set triggers with the Alerts feature, which permits operators to send alerts for XML inconsistencies, input/output errors, batch errors and mapped network drive errors

Ricoh Americas Corporation today announced it has expanded its information mobility offerings with advanced solutions that optimize customer engagement and help make information work for customers through mobile information capture and business process optimization.

The new solutions, Kofax Mobile Capture™ Platform and Kofax TotalAgility®, simplify development of smart process applications that quickly and easily link customer-facing systems of engagement – such as fax machines, email, scanners, multifunction products, smart phones, MS Office software and more – with systems of record – such as ERP, ECM, CRM and other line-of-business applications. These smart process applications capture business information in myriad forms, manage intricate business processes, integrate disparate data streams and enable easy analysis of user activity without requiring modification of enterprise applications.

For example, a company could use the Kofax Mobile Capture Platform to quickly enable 10,000 traveling sales representatives to capture information on their expense receipts by photographing them with their iOS and Android smartphones. Each image capture would initiate an automated accounts payable process, coordinated by Kofax TotalAgility that updates the company’s enterprise accounting systems and archives the image, ultimately reimbursing the salespeople for aggregated travel and expenses.

In the same scenario, analytics tools available in Kofax TotalAgility would let managers analyze large volumes of travel and expense data by virtually any conceivable dimension, including employee name, time period, state or flight distance/cost. Kofax solutions can orchestrate thousands of similar processes across disparate business activities, capture technologies, systems of record and vertical industries.

“Ricoh’s leadership in information mobility, combined with its experience in designing and implementing advanced solutions for this new world of work, sets the company apart,” said Rory Byrne, Senior Vice President of OEM & Partner Strategy at Kofax. “By expanding its offerings to include the Kofax TotalAgility platform, incorporating analytics and mobile capture capabilities, Ricoh is well-positioned to deliver tremendous benefits to its customers, transforming and enhancing the information-intensive First Mile of business processes.”

Since 2003, Ricoh and Kofax have been providing solutions to hundreds of companies in North America, including the Miami Marlins Major League Baseball team and Tenaska, Inc., one of the largest private, independent energy companies in the U.S. Smart process applications have significantly streamlined the Marlins’ accounts payable workflow, and accelerated Tenaska’s trade confirmation processing and enterprise scanning capabilities.

“Kofax solutions are among the many innovative options we offer to help our customers solve their most important business problems,” said Matt Sakauchi, Vice President, Technology Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “Our partnership with Kofax helps our customers capture, transform and manage information, enabling quick and informed decisions throughout the customer’s enterprise, resulting in significantly improved performance.”

Ricoh is one of Kofax’s leading channel partners with broad coverage domestically and globally. It recently earned the 2014 Transform Award for Global Partner of the Year from Kofax.

In the e-mail age, what’s the purpose of a brick-and-mortar university mail center?

This question has inspired a major transformation of what used to be the traditional mail center at Loyola University Maryland. Managed by Ricoh Americas Corporation, the new Ricoh Higher Education Student Mail Services is a study in information mobility, the ability for individuals to access just the right information at the right time, just when they need it.

With U.S. Mail volume down substantially at Loyola, students no longer check their mailboxes with any frequency. One student, in fact, didn’t discover a Valentine card last year until April. Situations like this created additional work for mail center employees at the end of the year, having to empty out all the mailboxes that weren’t checked throughout the year. Meanwhile, package volume has soared 30 percent in the same time period due to the adoption of online shopping and textbook rentals. Package pickup, however, has increasingly required streamlining to reduce half-hour or more waits during peak times (September and January). Because of a space crunch, the University was running out of secure space to store packages.

Loyola has addressed these challenges – underused mailboxes, insufficient package space, security issues and unacceptable waiting times – by adopting the Ricoh Campus Mail Solution: a combination of Ricoh University Kiosk, a kiosk-based self-service electronic workflow; and a High Density Mail System enabling the use of space-saving barcoded mail slots. The overhaul has eliminated the stacks of traditional mailboxes for Loyola University Maryland’s 4,000 undergraduate students. It has created proper storage for packages, and has returned 10,000 square feet of valuable space to the university to use as it pleases.

Entirely new workflow
When a package or piece of mail arrives at the mail center, students receive a notification email. They then visit the mail center at their convenience and swipe their student ID card at a self-service kiosk located near the mail center window. That action sends an electronic alert to mail center workers along with the location and physical characteristics of the students’ packages and mail. A worker retrieves the items, which are presented to the student as they reach the front desk. Wait time is projected to fall from 30 minutes to one minute or less based on Ricoh’s experience at other university mail centers.

Student mail is no longer stored in mailboxes. Instead, it is sorted into a high-density rolling racking system. Mail workers use small scanners, worn on their fingers, to scan barcodes on each slot as they deposit a mail piece. The barcode triggers an email alert to the student, who stops by the mail center to pick it up. Mail center supervisors can electronically track customer waits in real-time.

It’s a game of muscle, sweat and titanic collisions, but pro football is ultimately built on information, from statistical minutiae to X’s and O’s in the playbook to the business data that drives the front office.

The Kansas City Chiefs, entering their third season working with Ricoh Americas Corporation as the team’s document services provider, epitomize the powerful use of information for performance both on and off the field. Together, the pair is achieving high information mobility, meaning information is easily accessible to the right people in the right form at the right time to help the team compete with its NFL rivals.

“With Ricoh, rather than just selling us printers, their team serves as a strategic information asset,” said Bob Stirton, Director of IT for the Chiefs. “They sit down with us quarterly, review metrics and discuss ideas to help us improve performance in many ways. They also show up several hours early on game day to provide support for some very busy machines sprinkled throughout Arrowhead Stadium.”

Ricoh plays a variety of roles for the Chiefs, supporting the coaching staff with weekly full-color copies of playbooks to supplement digital iPad playbooks, supporting the national media in the press box with printed copies of play-by-play stats after each quarter, and supporting other departments with printed copies of food orders, receipts, ticket summaries, reports, etc. To fulfill these roles, the company cost-effectively manages a fleet of more than 150 office printers, multifunction products and production printers.

Ricoh has also helped the Chiefs dramatically improve their internal collaboration through an intranet upgrade based on the newest version of Microsoft SharePoint. A dynamic home page synthesizes vital information from around the organization and the NFL for easy access.

Future phases of the relationship will involve a new automated travel-and-expense workflow system to streamline submissions and approvals, reducing a 35-day process to a 24-hour turnaround. Also in the plans is an accounts payable workflow that will save time and money and improve cash flow. Ricoh provides the Chiefs with frequent usage analytics to continuously improve information workflows.

“The new world of work definitely extends to professional football,” said Tim Vellek, Senior Vice President, Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “As with any business, information mobility – the ability to access the right information in the right form at the right time – is increasingly crucial to outstanding performance. We’re thrilled to work with the Chiefs organization, helping them perform at their best in every way conceivable.”

Print servers can cost an organization thousands of dollars to buy and manage, but in 2014, they’re not always necessary. Just print through the cloud.

That’s why Ricoh Americas Corporation today announced the release of an application that will make its business-class printers and multifunction products (MFPs) Google Cloud Print Ready.

With the Ricoh App for Google Cloud Print web printing services, organizations can print from smartphones, tablets, laptops and other devices without the need for expensive and time-consuming print servers and drivers, potentially achieving significant hardware and software-related savings.

Ricoh is focused on information mobility – helping customers make information accessible to those who need it, when they need it to make critical business decisions – and this app is the newest example of how workers can easily access, transform and manage information.

The solution enables businesses, nonprofits, government agencies and schools to leverage the capabilities of business-class document services at a lower cost. For example, the Ricoh App for Google Cloud Print web printing services is ideal for elementary schools where many students use cloud-friendly Google Chromebooks. Designed to leverage cloud apps, the laptops are tightly integrated with cloud-based applications in the Google ecosystem, including Google Cloud Print and the Google Docs office productivity suite.

Ricoh Americas Corporation today announced that its inaugural Interact community events received exceptional accolades from attendees who benefited from an interactive dialogue with Ricoh specialists with hands-on knowledge of integrating the market-leading InfoPrint 5000, RICOH ProcessDirector and RICOH ProcessDirector Express software solutions into commercial and transactional print environments. Interact, deemed “highly informative and network worthy” by attendees, brought together operations personnel, technical analysts and administrators to discuss their current operations; hear from Ricoh experts of what the future of inkjet and software advancements will hold; and share case studies to help others grow their businesses.

As today’s work environment continues to change, it’s necessary for users of all levels to have hands-on experience with inkjet technology innovations, advanced workflows and next generation services that will help make information work better for them and their customers.

At Interact, attendees worked with Ricoh subject matter experts from development, product marketing and professional services to analyze the latest enhancements to its award-winning inkjet and software portfolios while mastering tricks of the trade that will help increase efficiencies and productivity of their day-to-day operations. The communication value of this engaging event was mutually beneficial: customers discovered new ways to enhance their operations, and Ricoh delivered feedback to the research and development team to drive continual improvement into its production print portfolio.

Positive feedback from attendees via post-event surveys and conversations includes:
• "We know that the InfoPrint 5000 platform is integral to our success. Interact helped us understand how to better leverage our investment. Conversations around others’ case studies helped to stimulate connections and featured in-depth technology reviews and insights,” said a vice president of business operations
• “I will sleep better at night knowing that RICOH ProcessDirector takes care of more things than I knew it did,” said a senior application architect
• “I can buy printers or software from anyone. It’s the Ricoh people who make the difference,” said a senior system administrator
• “Not only did I feel like I was able to get answers to questions I have, but I felt like I was able to communicate some of the needs for the future engineering focus on the InfoPrint 5000," said an operations technical analyst
• “It took longer to sign the RICOH ProcessDirector contract than to install and put it in production,” said a manager of output operations
• "My priority was to see if I could expand my knowledge so that we can impact our production environment positively. This was time well spent," said an operator for a newly installed InfoPrint 5000 commented

"Ricoh’s real value-add with Interact is that we present attendees with access to others facing similar business related challenges, and a forum to gather solid advice from experts and peers. Time and time again, we hear from our customers and partners that they value Ricoh’s ability to create and maintain solid relationships – beyond what is commonly thought of as a client to vendor relationship," said Ted Takahashi, senior vice president, Production Print Global Marketing Center, Ricoh. “This hands-on approach, coupled with our market-leading portfolio, continues to be successful as we help our customers evolve and grow in today’s new world of work.”

Ricoh Americas Corporation today announced it has authored the first study guide for the newly updated CompTIA CDIA+ certification exam. CDIA+ is a key credential for managers of digital business information.

The new CompTIA CDIA+ (CD0-001) Certification Handbook covers all the new subject matter on the updated exam, such as cloud computing, mobile technology, regulatory changes and computations for information volume, network bandwidth and information storage. These are all critical considerations for fostering the digital information companies seek in this new world of work.

The e-book is published by CompTIA, the premier IT credentialing body, which licensed the content from Ricoh to create the first exam preparation guide CompTIA has ever published. Typically, study guides are published and sold by third parties.

Employers and business clients prize certified CDIA+ professionals, who by passing the rigorous exam prove their expertise in a wide variety of best practices for capturing, transforming and managing the information fueling organizations of every kind. The CompTIA CDIA+ certification covers all the major areas of planning, designing and specifying a digital imaging and content management system. It also provides intensive training to equip account executives and managers with the best foundation for electronic workflow and client IT support. There are more than 13,000 CDIA+ professionals in the world today. Ricoh adapted the e-book content from the intensive training it provides to employees.

“CDIA+ is an incredibly useful credential, and a lot of effort went into updating the certification and preparing the study guide,” said James Stanger, senior director, product management, CompTIA. “We’re extremely pleased with the quality, depth and breadth of the content Ricoh has developed. The case study and questions are based on authentic customer scenarios, not rote knowledge, and focus extensively on both the emerging technology and legal considerations in enterprise content management that will make the biggest differences in clients’ business success.”

Information management professionals who achieve CDIA+ certification typically have titles like electronic records manager, enterprise content management administrator, solution sales specialist or ECM (enterprise content management) consultant.

“To help these professionals prepare, this new study guide directly leverages the expertise Ricoh has developed in finding new ways to help our customers make information work for them,” said Dominic Pontrelli, Senior Vice President of Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “Similar to Ricoh – but on an individual scale – managers of digital business information are focused on capturing, transforming and managing information so that it gets to the right people at the right time to make critical business decisions.”

The study guide is available on the Amazon Kindle store, iBooks, Google Play, Barnes & Noble and Kobo. It incorporates a wide array of material on enterprise content management, information capture, storage, networking, security, compliance, needs analysis, solution design and implementation. CompTIA enlisted the Vook publishing company to produce the e-book, available in the MOBI and common EPUB e-book formats.

Participants need big, bright, sharp, dynamic graphics and images along with full-bodied, amplified sound. With these capabilities, our customers can better make their information work for them.”

The new projection systems offer a host of features and capabilities for the AV integrator, including built-in networking capability, optional Wi-Fi connectivity, and additional inputs, such as HDMI for Blu-ray video.

The MSRP for the RICOH PJ WX5361N is $2,300, and the MSRP for the RICOH PJ X5371N is $2,450. The projectors can be mounted on tables and ceilings either in front of or behind the screen. The price includes remote control, batteries, cables and cords, along with a 3-year warranty.

“At Ricoh, we’re focused on information mobility, which means helping customers get information to those who need it, when they need it to make critical business decisions, and these are our newest AV solutions to do just that,” said Matt Sakauchi, Vice President, Technology Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation.

The new RICOH Interactive Whiteboard D5500 is an interactive hardware/software solution for corporations and government agencies that need to collaborate on important business initiatives across offices and geographies. The product enables a company to easily present finely detailed information and images on the 55-inch-diagonal HD screen. Participants can view the information via a virtual private network using PCs, tablets, smartphones or up to four RICOH Interactive Whiteboard D5500s connected across an enterprise. Annotations made on one D5500 appear instantaneously on the other three. The RICOH Interactive Whiteboard D5500 is simple to use and offers a finer, smoother, higher-resolution writing experience than most competing solutions.

A more economical whiteboard solution involves Ricoh’s new RICOH PJ WX4141N/PJ WX4141NI Ultra Short Throw Business Projection System. The system can make walls and fixed physical whiteboards interactive, enabling businesses, schools and other organizations to improve their performance through more dynamic collaboration. Presenters can display, underline, highlight, annotate, capture, and share projected images that previously would have disappeared when the presentation ended. The new RICOH PJ WX4141NI (the “I” signifies interactive) incorporates an embedded interactivity sensor to activate an included electronic markup pen.

Available now, dealers can now create a complete videoconferencing solution that enables individuals or groups to come together virtually anywhere there’s an internet connection, on the spur of the moment, enabling them to easily capture, transform and manage information allowing for quicker and more informed decision making. The solution combines two unique Ricoh technologies, the RICOH Unified Communication System P3000 and the RICOH PJ WX4141N Ultra Short Throw projector, in a complete, portable videoconferencing solution for business-to-business applications. The solution helps eliminate the need for costly, complicated permanent videoconferencing rooms, providing a more affordable solution for entire staffs to share. When the need arises, workers can carry the system to their offices, conference rooms or “huddle rooms” and collaborate around the planet.

The Ricoh Digital Signage Solution offers a large-scale alternative to flat-panel digital signage systems with a unique new solution that produces a larger image than conventional flat-panel displays. This mobile projector-based system gives customers the freedom to project brilliant signage or graphics onto flat, curved, conical and even spherical surfaces up to 15 feet wide. Available now, the Ricoh Digital Signage Solution packages Ricoh’s groundbreaking, highly portable RICOH PJ WX4141N Ultra Short Throw projectors with a Lenovo computer preloaded with Scalable Display Technologies’ edge-blending software. The solution is ideal for hotel lobbies, corporate events, hospital foyers, museums, clubs – anywhere one wants signage that will grab attention.

The new 4500-lumen RICOH PJ WX5361N and 5000-lumen RICOH PJ X5371N high-end business-class projectors display bright, crisp images as large as 25 feet diagonally from distances of up to 45 feet. Ideal for bigger rooms in businesses, schools, government agencies and houses of worship, they come in a choice of formats: WXGA (1280 x 800 resolution) in the RICOH PJ WX5361N and XGA (1024x768 resolution) in the RICOH PJ X5371N. The new projectors offer a host of new features and capabilities for the AV integrator, including a built-in networking capability, optional Wi-Fi connectivity, and additional inputs, such as HDMI for Blu-ray video.

Ricoh Americas Corporation today announced the new RICOH MP C401 and RICOH MP C401SR color multifunction products (MFPs), offering all the capabilities of Ricoh’s new intelligent MFP platform in a compact footprint. The devices help companies more efficiently capture, transform and manage information to support the growing necessity for information mobility – enabling employees to access information from anywhere and at any time to make critical business decisions in today’s rapidly evolving workplaces.

Ideal for offices with limited space, the RICOH MP C401 series is capable of printing documents as large as 8.5 x 14 inches in resolutions up to high-quality 1,200 dpi. They can serve as standalone devices or as part of a networked fleet in an enterprise business information solution. Along with a small footprint – 24 inches wide x 22 inches deep for the RICOH MP C401SR, which includes 250-sheet internal finishing – the MFPs offer far more power than a desktop MFP, thanks to their robust document handling capabilities, along with a panoply of standard advanced features to drive your office productivity forward. They also meet stringent new standards for ENERGY STAR 2.0 certification, and have earned an EPEAT gold rating in the US market.

“The MP C401 and MP C401SR are specifically designed for the new world of work,” said Matt Sakauchi, Vice President, Technology Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “These powerful yet affordable new MFPs are optimized to mobilize information, putting it directly into the hands of the worker who needs it, precisely when they need it, offering a wide range of usability, security, cloud and sustainability features.”

Operation can be a tablet-like experience with a new optional 10.1-inch-wide Super VGA Smart Operation Panel offering drag-and-drop, pinch-flick-and-swipe action. With the optional Browser Unit, the panel provides access to cloud-based document management and printing services through Ricoh’s Integrated Cloud Environment (ICE). Users can scan documents and files to popular Web services, transforming those documents into searchable PDF documents on the fly.

The RICOH MP C401 and RICOH MP C401SR support today’s mobile workforce with the RICOH Smart Device Print&Scan app, which enables smartphones and tablets (iOS and Android) to seamlessly operate with multifunction products and printers through the cloud. Optional Ricoh HotSpot printing similarly enables smartphone and tablet users to print via email, mobile app or the Web.

Exemplifying Ricoh’s sustainability commitment, a number of features in the RICOH MP C401 and RICOH MP C401SR are designed to save energy and reduce environmental impact, including standard duplexing, customizable print quotas, and an eco-friendly indicator to prominently display paper usage. These models can be programmed to power up in the morning and power down at night, or according to any schedule a customer prefers.

Addressing security and compliance concerns, the new MFPs offer password-protected, user-specific authentication; address book and stored document encryption; and a DataOverwriteSecurity System (DOSS) that destroys latent images and stored data. A new Mandatory Security Information Printing feature can apply name, time and login of the authorized user on output.

The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the RICOH MP C401 is $5,880 and $6,405 for the RICOH MP C401SR. Both are priced low at the level of predecessor 32 ppm models. The RICOH MP C401SR comes standard with a 250-sheet internal finisher for stapling up to 50-page print jobs.

Ricoh Americas Corporation will demonstrate this week at InfoComm 2014 in Las Vegas (Booth #C5825) a highly portable business-class group videoconferencing system that integrates voice, video and data sharing.

By combining two unique Ricoh technologies – the Unified Communication System P3000 (built on the VidyoWorks™ platform from Vidyo®) and the PJ WX4141N Ultra Short Throw Business Projection System – individuals and groups can come together virtually anywhere there is an internet connection, on the spur of the moment, enabling them to easily capture, transform and manage information allowing for quicker and more informed decision making.

Available now, dealers can create a complete videoconferencing solution for B2B applications. The combined technologies provide a solution that directly addresses a costly problem: Companies spend enormous amounts of money on complicated permanent videoconferencing rooms that are typically restricted to top executives and, remarkably, are commonly underused.

A perfect match
Dealers can create this solution by starting with the P3000, a portable, sleek, self-contained videoconferencing system as easy to use as a mobile phone. It incorporates a camera, microphone, speaker and cloud-based service for integrating up to 20 callers, with encryption through the VidyoWorks platform that helps to secure the conference link. When combined with the RICOH PJ WX4141N, together they create a complete videoconferencing solution that’s perfect for home office and portable business applications.

The RICOH PJ WX4141N is a breakthrough ultra-short-throw projector that projects bright, crisp images measuring up to 80 inches diagonal without shadows, noise or glare. It can be placed from 4.6 to 9.8 inches from a wall or screen. The big projected image enables participants to see one another, even with multiple participants on the screen.

The projector is also compact, measuring 10 x 6 x 9 inches and weighing 6.6 pounds. The P3000 is a thin (1.6 inches) tablet-sized package weighing only 3.5 pounds. While portable and affordable, the combination offers all the benefits of fixed videoconferencing systems, including the value of face-to-face meetings in a portable solution.

The P3000 connects up to 20 participants at once with the push of a button, activating a 94-degree wide angle lens that allows multiple people to be viewed in a room. A variety of screen layouts are available and up to nine participants can appear on the screen at one time along with the ability for any participant to share their desktop with the group.

“Companies are continually forced to choose between pricey permanent videoconferencing rooms or consumer-class apps they find online,” said Matt Sakauchi, Vice President, Technology Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “Consumer apps are really designed for one-to-one versus many-to-many calls, and they often lack the security capabilities a business requires. The P3000, on the other hand, hits the sweet spot between the two extremes, meeting the needs of today’s more fluidly collaborative work styles. Because the solution is a portable, self-contained unit, any office, meeting room or home office can instantly become a videoconference room.”

This portable videoconferencing solution is the newest technology from Ricoh to help customers make information work for them. In today’s dynamically changing work environment, the need for virtual collaboration continues to increase. Ricoh is focused on information mobility – helping customers to make information accessible by those who need it when they need it to make critical business decisions.

A sales manager, for example, can conduct regular videoconference calls with their salespeople in the field. The salespeople can call into the conference via the solution’s iPhone®, iPad® or PC app, which activates their video cameras as it joins them to the call.

The P3000 is available for an MSRP of $2,200, plus a $99 per month fee for subscription to a cloud service and a $47 per month service fee for the apps. The PJ WX4141N Ultra Short Throw projector is available for an MSRP of $2,299.00. For details on Ricoh’s full line of products, services and solutions, please visit www.ricoh-usa.com.

Derived from plants, biofuel is an environmentally sustainable approach to the world’s energy needs, but its production is generally too inefficient and expensive to effectively compete with fossil fuels.

This may change with the help of two high-school student research projects presented at the recent Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF) in Los Angeles, earning three students the annual Ricoh Sustainable Development Award (RSDA).

The projects affirmed the truth that sustainability can, in fact, be good business. One project presented a new, more efficient way to turn corn crop waste into energy. The other showed how genetic modification can cut costs of biofuel extraction from algae.

The winners were Jonah Zachariah Butler of Sibley East High School in Minnesota, and the team of Wenjia Li of Jasper High School & Anoop Vemulapalli of Plano West High School, both in Plano, Texas. The three were awarded a total of $25,000 in scholarships from Ricoh Americas Corporation.

“These remarkably gifted students share our vision that careful use of the planet’s scarce resources makes perfect business sense,” said Matt Sakauchi, Vice President, Technology Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “Sustainable technologies will help us create a more resilient business climate and planet, and will be in high demand in their own right. Nurturing the next generation’s ideas and creativity is an important element of our corporate social responsibility.”

Butler developed a unique process to extract energy from corn crop waste. He employed peracetic acid in conjunction with fungi to release almost all of the sugars in the plant material and convert them into lipids (valuable oils) and ethanol. This method utilizes about 97 percent of the available sugars in biomass, or 34 percent to 37 percent more than any other existing process.

Li and Vemulapalli created a new way to extract energy from algae, which are the most promising long-term and sustainable sources of biofuels due to the direct use of their lipids. Traditional methods of attaining these lipids are not commercially viable, keeping algal biofuels out of the commercial market today. The students genetically modified algae to dramatically cut the cost of biofuel extractions, significantly improving its commercial viability.

More than $350,000 for 30 scholars
The annual RSDA provides scholarships to high school students whose technical innovations offer the greatest potential for increasing our ability to grow environmentally friendly and socially responsible businesses.

Since the award’s establishment, Ricoh has granted more than $350,000 in scholarships to 30 young scholars in the United States and abroad. Intel ISEF is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, showcasing more than 1,700 of the world’s leading high school students and their independent scientific research projects.

One of Ricoh’s founding principles is that global concerns can be resolved by creating harmony between business and the environment. Ricoh established the RSDA to encourage and champion students who share those values by bringing about innovations that help reduce society’s environmental impact.

Ricoh envisions a sustainable society, one that balances the three pillars of sustainability: Planet (environment), People (society), and Profit (economic activities). To realize this vision, Ricoh strives to minimize its environmental impact from resource extraction, energy consumption, chemical discharges, emissions and other activities, and to conserve the Earth’s precious resources. Ricoh supports a business model that minimizes the footprint of its activities while maximizing its economic value and contribution to society.

Individual workstyles continue to quickly evolve in today’s dynamic work environment, and as a result information mobility – enabling workers to access information from anywhere at any time – is essential to making critical business decisions. These compact devices are the newest offerings from Ricoh to help customers make information work for them.

“These solutions help our customers with smaller volumes and lighter workloads meet their unique needs for economy and performance,” said Matt Sakauchi, Vice President, Technology Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “These are important offerings, however, that round out Ricoh’s complete array of solutions. Regardless of the scope, we have a solution to make information work for each customer.”

The new devices feature a strong set of capabilities, including an ID Card Copy mode in the
RICOH SP 112SU that enables users to copy both sides of a wallet-sized ID card onto a single page for convenience and efficiency.

The RICOH SP 112 and RICOH SP 112SU are faster than predecessor models (up from 13 ppm in the SP 100 e and RICOH SP 100SU e). Both devices handle larger paper (up from 8.5 x11 inches to 8.5 x 14 inches), and include a 50-sheet paper tray and an all-in-one print cartridge for easy replacement.

The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for the printer-only RICOH SP 112 is $119, and the multifunctional RICOH SP 112SU is $144.

April 2014

Ricoh Americas Corporation today unveiled an interactive whiteboard for corporations and government agencies that need to collaborate on important business initiatives across offices and geographies.

The new RICOH Interactive Whiteboard D5500 is simple to use and resistant to intrusion while offering a finer, smoother, higher-resolution writing experience than most competing solutions. Ricoh will demonstrate the system at the InfoComm 2014 show, June 14-20 in Las Vegas at Booth# C5825.

The RICOH D5500 enables a company to easily present finely detailed information and images on the 55-inch-diagonal HD screen. Presenters can invite up to 84 participants to view information via a virtual private network using up to four RICOH Interactive Whiteboard D5500s that can connect across an enterprise. Annotations made on one appear instantaneously on the other three.

“In today’s fast paced work environment, it’s critical for companies to securely mobilize their information around the world in a way that collapses time and distance barriers,” said Matt Sakauchi, Vice President, Technology Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “Solutions like the D5500 put information to work for our customers, giving them an enhanced ability to see, learn, share and act to meet their most important business challenges.”

Simplicity a virtue
Many interactive whiteboards are essentially full-blown computers, which can pose a problem. Their software and controls are so complex that only experts end up using them. Their Internet connectivity and writeable hard drives make them vulnerable to viruses and intruders. The RICOH Interactive Whiteboard D5500, by contrast, is a simple-to-operate firmware-based system that is more resistant to intrusion.

The RICOH D5500 can be set up in minutes. The device is engineered to enable even first-time users to easily write, draw, edit, move, resize and save images via intuitive touchscreen controls.

The included electronic pen enables smooth and quick annotation with minimal lag, and its soft-touch nib and erase function provide natural feedback. The whiteboard’s 1920 x 1020 dpi resolution provides optimal clarity for fine lines created by the pen or presented in drawings or schematics.

Users can extend the power of the RICOH D5500 by creating remote interactive whiteboards on their walls using the RICOH PJ WX4141NI and a PC connection. The RICOH D5500 can also be used as a high-quality display for Ricoh’s Unified Communication System – the RICOH P3000 – or other videoconferencing systems while sharing information via the RICOH D5500’s picture-in-picture function.

Security
The RICOH D5500 helps reduce information security fears typically associated with traditional whiteboards. Confidential information won’t get left behind for others to see, as all data is permanently deleted just by turning off the power switch at the end of a presentation. Presenters also have more control over who sees a presentation, as remote participants can only access a presentation through PIN code authentication. Audience members have no easy way to take a presentation or share it. With the RICOH D5500 presenters can choose to share images and handwritten notes as emailed PDFs at their sole discretion.

The RICOH Interactive Whiteboard D5500 is available now at a suggested retail price of $7,754 for the whiteboard, $1,305 for the optional stand and $1,200 for a collaboration license.

As companies in the sign industry seek to grow their businesses, they also need to keep up with marketing trends that are influencing their customers’ expectations. Ricoh Americas Corporation today unveiled new color laser printers and MFPs that are ideal for small offices and corporate workgroups, and can help significantly increase productivity and efficiency.

The RICOH SP C250DN/SP C252DN Color Laser Printer Series and SP C250SF/SP C252SF Multifunction Product (MFP) Series feature standard Wi-Fi connectivity, mobile printing capabilities and reduced energy consumption. They produce 21 pages per minute from a compact platform that, combined with the wireless support, expands placement options in small offices, home offices, school offices, law firms or on retail store counters. Image quality is strong with a range of settings for economy or high resolution printing up to 2,400 x 600 dpi.

The RICOH SP C250DN/SP C252DN and SP C250SF/SP C252SF support today’s mobile workforce with Ricoh’s RICOH Smart Device Print&Scan app, which enables smartphones and tablets (iOS and Android) to seamlessly interoperate with MFPs and printers through the cloud.

“Adding wireless and mobile capabilities to the solid foundation of our predecessor models makes these devices ideal for a new world of work,” said Matt Sakauchi, Vice President, Technology Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “They combine maximum flexibility for mobilizing information with a very aggressive cost of ownership.”

The devices extend Ricoh’s commitment to the environment with aggressive typical electricity consumption (TEC) values, with the printer-only versions consuming 1.37 kWh/week and the multifunction versions, which print, copy, scan and fax, consuming 1.48 kWh/week. Forty-four years of Earth Days (April 22) have clearly emboldened employees to demand a greener workplace.

A full 3 out of 4 employed U.S. adults* (75 percent) say they would insist upon change if they saw obvious wasteful practices at work, according to a new online survey of over 900 U.S. workers conducted in March by Harris Poll and commissioned by Ricoh Americas Corporation. Two out of 3 employees (67 percent) would “report” their company if it harmed the environment. And, remarkably, more than 2 in 5 (44 percent) agreed with this statement: I would rather be unemployed than work for a company that’s knowingly harming the environment.

More than 1 in 10 (11 percent) say they actually are aware of activities at work that could damage the environment, and more than 1 in 3 (35 percent) believe their employer would sacrifice the environment for revenue.

“It certainly is a new world of work,” said Jason Dizzine, Director, Technology Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “Forty-four years ago, whether a workplace was conservation-minded or not, being green just wasn’t a substantial part of everyday conversations. Today’s workers, however, are more mindful of the fact that natural resources are scarce and that the planet can sustain only so much consumption. This is a wonderful cultural evolution, and it aligns perfectly with our tradition of optimizing document processes and mobilizing information.”

Guilt, yet hope
As environmentally concerned as the employees responding to the survey are, they say they often fall short in their actions. Nearly half of employees (46 percent) say they feel guilty that they’re not doing enough to help the environment, and more than 2 out of 3 employees (68 percent) agree they do more for the earth at home than at their workplaces. Still, there’s every reason to be hopeful. Nearly 3 in 5 (59 percent) believe our world will be more sustainable in 2050 than it is today.

One playful survey question resulted in some interesting responses. Employed adults were asked to classify themselves by choosing one of the following descriptions:

1. Army Green (I find ways to be green at work every day and demand that my co-workers do as well)
2. Forest Green (I recycle paper only since there is a recycling bin next to my desk)
3. Emerald Green (I do something green once a day)
4. Olive Green (I do something green once a week)
5. Sage Green (I do something green once a month)
6. Dusty Green (I can’t remember the last time I did something green at work)

Emerald Green was the most popular choice (26 percent). A generational twist emerged in this part of the survey: those aged 55-64 were far more likely than younger employees to describe themselves as Army Green. Twenty-seven percent of the 55-64-year-olds chose the answer vs. 14 percent of 18-34-year-olds, 17 percent of the 35-44-year-olds and 14 percent of the 45-54-year-olds.

Methodology
The Ricoh survey was conducted online within the United States by Harris Poll using its QuickQuery Omnibus platform between March 18 and 20, 2014, among 2,063 adults aged 18 and older, of whom 948 are employed full/part time. This online survey is not based on a probability sample and therefore no estimate of theoretical sampling error can be calculated. For complete survey methodology, including weighting variables, please see media contacts below.

Ricoh Americas Corporation today announced RICOH Streamline NX software for managing fleets of multifunction products (MFPs) and laser printers to help improve cost-effectiveness, productivity, sustainability, security and mobility.

The solution helps organizations improve document management efficiency by leveraging a modular platform that can combine print, scan, device management, accounting, reporting and authentication functionality with incredible scalability. It also simplifies administrative tasks to help reduce total cost of ownership.

“MFPs are important engines for mobilizing information in this new world of work,” said Jason Dizzine, Director, Technology Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “Streamline NX lets organizations take advantage of their MFP-based document management capabilities on a large scale with minimal administrative overhead. With Streamline NX, customers can optimize their document processes on fleetwide, workgroup and individual levels, configuring capabilities, controls, workflows, security profiles and much more.”

Organizations can manage hundreds or thousands of devices from a single administrative workstation, controlling security print features, scanning, quota management, comprehensive reporting and more. At each MFP, users have easy access to a wide range of document management tasks from the customizable home screen – no need to toggle between each application.

The Streamline NX server tracks usage volumes across dozens, hundreds or thousands of MFPs, reporting print/copy volumes, color usage and duplexing on an individual or aggregate basis. This detailed data enables organizations to monitor their use of paper and toner. They can then reduce costs through new usage policies that are enforced by the software and customizable for each user, group or individual. The base module also calculates the cost of individual, workgroup or department device usage, making it easy for accounting teams to manage chargebacks.

Options galore
Streamline NX is available in myriad configurations with optional modules that enable:

• Security print features, which require users to swipe IDs or log onto MFPs to scan, fax, copy and release print jobs. This authentication requirement helps ensure that only authorized users see private information and creates audit trails to help support regulatory compliance. The optional print server enables users to release their job at any Streamline NX-enabled MFP, laser printer on the network, or desktop printer and delete early drafts they never printed, thus saving on paper and toner.

• Client desktop printing, which brings security and chargeback capabilities to personal printers connected to an employee’s desktop PC or laptop. The module enables delegation so that a clerk, for instance, could release private documents sent to printing by an executive. The module can also be configured to route printing jobs to more affordable network printing devices than the one initially selected by the user.

• One-touch scanning, via the optional scanfax server, enabling users to scan paper documents and automatically send them to folders, fax servers, enterprise content management systems, file transfer systems, email or many different connected services, including Microsoft SharePoint®, Microsoft Exchange®, FileNet and DocumentMall®.

• Print release station, which enables organizations to implement Ricoh print capabilities with other vendors’ MFPs or printers giving them the same user experience they have on Ricoh MFPs.

• Mobile printing with Hotspot Enterprise, which lets smartphone users email a document, receive a release code and retrieve their printed document from any Streamline NX-enabled device. No longer do they have to log onto networks, download drivers, or burden IT with simple print requests. Streamline NX also integrates with RICOH Smart Device Print&Scan, an app that enables smartphones and tablets (iOS and Android) to seamlessly interoperate with multifunction products and printers through the cloud.

Ricoh today announced that Fifth Third Bank, a diversified financial services company that is among the leading money managers in the Midwest, has transformed its in-plant operations by tapping Ricoh to support its new, more efficient way of working – providing increased flexibility and cost-savings. Fifth Third Bank has selected the market-leading InfoPrint® 5000 continuous feed print platform and RICOH® ProcessDirector™ workflow software for the production of full-color transactional MICR documents for customers from 1,320 full-service Banking Centers in 12 states.

Fifth Third Bank produces 170M impressions annually and nearly 70M annual mailings in addition to the Bank’s significant online customer base that receives digital documents. With such an immense volume it is vital for the company to provide clients with three important things: the highest quality documents; delivering these confidential, critical communications accurately; and, meeting important regulatory requirements and deadlines. By adding the InfoPrint 5000 platform to its print environment, Fifth Third Bank is no longer burdened with legacy software and hardware, limited marketing opportunities, inevitable operating cost increases, restricted flexibility and outdated black and white documents.

“Traditionally in-house print operations are a cost center for a company. In our case, even more so than a more traditional bank, it is not enough to be cost-neutral, we have to be able to prove that our operations will ultimately save the company money,” said Mark Kearns, vice president, Bancorp Mail & Print Services, Fifth Third Bank. “The InfoPrint 5000 has allowed us to bring in the value of color, while decreasing costs. Shortly after installation, we quickly had a high visibility internal customer bring previously outsourced work back in-house thanks to the new color solution. A win for our customer and a win for us.”

Ricoh’s InfoPrint 5000 platform and RICOH ProcessDirector Express bring Fifth Third Bank an unprecedented level of cost effectiveness, scalability, flexibility and expanded marketing opportunities. Because Ricoh software and hardware are able to meet all regulatory requirements and deadlines, the Bank can now better capitalize on the demands of its credit card business, deliver transpromo output in full, variable data color faster and more effectively, and save on marketing campaigns with onserts, all of which means bringing more work in-house.

Fifth Third Bank has also streamlined hardware costs by returning all leased legacy equipment and converting currently owned assets into a disaster recovery low cost back-up solution, ensuring uninterrupted communications for all customers.

“The diligence Fifth Third Bank has shown in transforming their in-plant operations demonstrates the passion they have for delivering the best value to their customers in today’s new way of work. This is a key milestone for us, enabling Fifth Third Bank to decrease costs, expand business opportunities and exceed customer expectations,” said Winston Liu, vice president, Commercial Solutions, Continuous Feed, Ricoh. “There are many reasons Ricoh was named market leader by IDC for six consecutive years.* We think one major reason is customer satisfaction, like that represented here through our work with Fifth Third Bank.”

Released quarterly, IDC’s Production Printer Tracker provides a detailed database of information on the laser and high-speed inkjet market segments. The report includes data on overall market size, share by vendor and five-year projections.

“In a market that is showing modest growth, Ricoh’s InfoPrint 5000 continues to gain market share every year, which says quite a bit about the reliability and popularity of its production print technology,” said Amy Machado, senior analyst in IDC’s Hardcopy Peripheral Group. “The numbers bear out, year after year, that high-volume printers continue to invest their future in the Ricoh platform.”

“The InfoPrint 5000 has outsold itself every year, and this year we’ve gone beyond the 40 percent mark, which is quite a milestone for our flagship system,” said Winston Liu, Vice President, Commercial Print Solutions, Continuous Feed, Ricoh. “The InfoPrint 5000 is much more than hardware – with an ever-expanding and innovative suite of software and professional services, it delivers a strategic digital investment and has consistently proven to be an undeniable success.”

Ricoh Americas Corporation today introduced new flexibility, efficiency, cost savings and instructional potential to educators in the United States and Canada.

The Ricoh Testing and Grading Solution enables educators to create their own bubble-sheet optical mark recognition (OMR) tests, print them on plain paper from their nearest Ricoh multifunction product (MFP), and automatically grade completed tests using the MFP’s scanning capability. No special equipment is required, and educators no longer lose time and money shipping completed tests across the country for grading.

“The Ricoh Testing and Grading Solution is a breakthrough in efficiency and analysis that accelerates educators’ progress in a new world of learning,” said Tom Brown, Vice President, Government and Higher Education, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “Educators of today and tomorrow require a new level of information mobility that the traditional standardized test hasn’t offered. With the Ricoh Testing and Grading Solution, this enhanced information mobility is embedded in the DNA of every Ricoh MFP and, now, is available to every classroom with a Ricoh MFP nearby.”

Personalized bubble-sheet testing with the Ricoh Testing and Grading Solution saves tremendous amounts of time for educators who traditionally grade tests by hand, and then uniquely provides detailed analytics on the automatically compiled test results. With this new control, educators now have a better ability to discover and address new individual or system-wide improvement opportunities.

The Ricoh Testing and Grading Solution powered by Remark installs on a PC and directly interfaces with a Ricoh MFP. Educators can create test forms from a variety of word-processing software programs and can include barcodes for identifying classes or schools. Completed tests are scanned at the MFP, with results exportable in more than 35 formats, including SPSS, Microsoft Excel, Access, SQL Server and more. The software produces an individual report for each student.

Analytics are key difference
The Ricoh Testing and Grading Solution includes powerful analytics that give educators insight into a variety of important areas, including individual student needs, student body weaknesses, poorly phrased test questions, pass/fail percentages and distribution of scores.

The Ricoh Testing and Grading Solution helps save school systems money by using plain paper instead of pre-printed bubble-sheet forms, and can integrate with selected student management systems. It is part of a series of Ricoh solutions dedicated to education that includes University Kiosk and Inbound Mail.

Ricoh Americas Corporation, Xerox Corporation and Lexmark International, Inc. today filed two Petitions for Inter Partes Review of U.S. Patent No. 8,488,173; and certain claims of U.S. Patent No. 7,477,410 at the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). The new actions are being filed jointly by all three companies in a continuing effort to protect Ricoh, Xerox and Lexmark customers and dealers against the assertion of these patents by MPHJ Technology Investments LLC.

As part of the Inter Partes Review Petition, Ricoh, Xerox and Lexmark are seeking a ruling from the USPTO that the claims are unpatentable and were fully anticipated by various prior art references.

This is the second in series of actions that the companies have undertaken to demonstrate their commitment to their customers and authorized dealer networks. In May 2013, Ricoh and Xerox filed action to nullify U.S. Patent No. 7,986,426 and help disable MPHJ’s licensing campaign against its customers.

In addition, MPHJ’s business practices are currently under investigation or have previously been investigated by the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) as well as the Attorneys General of Minnesota, Nebraska, New York and Vermont.

In a joint statement, the companies said “Ricoh, Xerox and Lexmark have clear positions on the protection of intellectual property. We feel strongly that the infringement claims are without merit and the licensing demands of MPHJ are unsubstantiated. We feel it is important to take this action to support our customers and dealer networks from these frivolous claims.”

Ricoh, Xerox and Lexmark will continue to monitor MPHJ’s licensing efforts and will update their customers and authorized dealer networks with any further developments regarding the USPTO’s Review.

Every print service provider aspires to become a marketing service provider to expand its business opportunities, but many companies fail to make it over the crucial hump.

Pacful, Inc., a 50+ employee company headquartered in California and a Ricoh customer, is an exception to the rule. The company, which describes itself as a print and fulfillment provider, has succeeded in becoming indispensable to national brands around the country.

“We’re well over the hump,” said Jennifer Hudek, President of Pacful. “We are now a full-fledged marketing service provider.”

Over the past three years, Ricoh has helped with Pacful’s transformation by combining strategic insight with powerful tools, specifically the over 40 customized Web-based storefronts Ricoh has helped Pacful create for clients.

Pacful clients, typically marketing / event departments at large companies, store their branded content – high-resolution logos, document templates, collateral designs, contact information and other digital assets – in these custom-branded websites. Central storage helps clients maintain critical brand consistency as they order print jobs, event materials, promotional items, even branded garments directly through the shared sites. Orders flow directly into Pacful’s print / inventory management systems, where they are swiftly executed.

“When clients work in our Web storefronts, they often don’t even realize they’ve left their own intranets,” said Hudek. “That’s because our print management infrastructure is so well integrated into their normal intranet experience. It’s seamless, and with Ricoh’s support, we’ve effectively become an extension of their marketing team. As repeat customers, they don’t need heavy consultation. They get exactly what they want, with consistent quality and turnaround, every time.”

Ricoh leads the way with Pacful
Pacful deploys its Web storefronts using MarcomCentral software from Ricoh strategic partner PTI Marketing Technologies®. MarcomCentral is a comprehensive Web-to-print system that automates the creation, ordering, printing and delivery of static, personalized and variable data pieces. Clients use it to automate marketing, creative, fulfillment and distribution – even 1-to-1 mail or email campaigns – with comprehensive tracking. Clients can easily extend their campaigns to microsites and mobile platforms with MarcomCentral.

“No matter how smart we are, print service providers need the right tools to become successful marketing service providers,” said Hudek. “Our tools come from Ricoh – MarcomCentral backed up by RICOH Pro C901 Graphic Arts+ Edition color production printers. These 90 page-per-minute workhorses handle the growing volume MarcomCentral has generated for us. We get near-offset quality at a significantly reduced cost per page compared with the large, expensive digital presses, which are falling out of favor in the industry. We can then pass this savings on to our clientele.”

Pacful started out three years ago with a single RICOH Pro C901. In the ensuing years, the company has quintupled its fleet with two in Sacramento, two in Redwood City and one in Fort Wayne, Ind., all buttressed by a stable of black and white Ricoh production printers.

“The transition from print service provider to marketing service provider, though difficult, opens up a multitude of opportunities for companies like Pacful that achieve it,” said Tim Vellek, Vice President, Production Printing Business Group, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “By offering campaign management, variable data printing, easy access to marketing materials and much more, a marketing service provider can deepen its relationship with customers and give prospects ample reason to engage with the business. Ricoh is committed to providing the solutions, products, training and business development tools that can help more print service providers succeed in their transition.”

Innovators never stop innovating, which is why Ricoh Electronics, Inc. three years ago blanketed the rooftop of its Southern California headquarters with electricity-generating solar panels.

The manufacturing subsidiary of Ricoh Company, Ltd. is now generating more than 10 percent of its electricity at its 1100 Valencia Avenue facility through the enhancement, exemplifying Ricoh’s equally deep commitment to sustainability.

The 996 silicone crystal panels in Tustin, Calif., have generated 1,105 MWh of electricity to date, reducing CO2 emissions equivalent to driving 639,376 miles. These emissions would require nearly 4,362 trees to absorb. Over the past year, the subsidiary has produced 110 percent of its planned amount.

“This project expresses Ricoh’s enduring commitment to addressing global challenges such as climate change, natural resource depletion and ecosystem degradation,” said Eiko Risch, Director of Environment, Health and Safety, Ricoh Electronics, Inc. “In fact, this work is as significant as our business operations. We carry it out by helping our customers work more sustainably, which often renders significant cost savings, and striving to make our technologies, supply chain, manufacturing processes, materials selection and facilities management as eco-friendly as they can be. Our Ricoh Electronics, Inc. solar power generation in California was our first such installation outside of Japan and is just one example of our worldwide mission.”

Ricoh has set a goal of reducing its total lifecycle of CO2 emissions by 87.5 percent before the year 2050, with an interim goal of a 30 percent reduction by 2020 (baseline year: 2000). Once again, the company has been rated as one of the Global 100 Most Sustainable Corporations in the world for the 10th consecutive year. Furthermore, Ricoh has Times Square’s only solar-powered billboard. Using LED lighting, the Ricoh Eco Board has saved more than 83,000 Kwh of energy since 2009.

Ricoh Americas Corporation today introduced two new color multifunction products (MFP) packing rich functionality into a compact footprint for smaller offices and workgroups.

The RICOH MP C2003 and MP C2503 print 20 and 25 pages per minute respectively while making information work for customers with a wide range of cloud and mobility services. Through an intuitive home screen or optional Smart Operation Panel, the MFPs connect to Ricoh’s Integrated Cloud Environment (ICE), which offers an extensive menu of document storage, management and OCR services.

“In today’s dynamic work environment, nothing can be more frustrating than trying to access information that’s slightly out of reach,” said Jason Dizzine, Vice President, Technology Marketing, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “That’s why we’re introducing two new MFPs with technology that helps customers access, transform and share information from anywhere, anytime.”

Take the lead in mobility
The RICOH MP C2003 and MP C2503 offer more ways to access information and manage documents beyond the office. Mobile print users with wireless access can now utilize the free RICOH Smart Device Print&Scan app, which lets smartphone and tablet users seamlessly print and now scan directly from these new Ricoh MFPs to mobile devices, as well as send scanned data to or print from their cloud storage services. And while most mobile printing apps offer only basic printing functions, Ricoh’s new app enables users to choose orientation, duplexing, finishing, color/monochrome and more.

Innovation that makes a difference
With the RICOH MP C2003 and MP C2503 comes the introduction of the new Stapleless Finisher, an optional feature unique to Ricoh, which bonds as many as five pages together without any metal fasteners. In addition to being friendly to the environment, a stapleless bond is safer for situations where food, pharmaceuticals and other consumables are made. It is also ideal for schools and child care facilities or anywhere young children are present.

The RICOH MP C2003 and MP C2503 further support sustainability with Typical Electricity Consumption (TEC) values that are among the lowest in this MFP category at 0.72 and 0.91 kWh@h/week. Other environmentally friendly features include programmable shutdown and power-up, automated duplexing, innovative PxP-EQ toner (requires less heat than traditional toner), and an Eco-Friendly Indicator that coaches organizations to reduce paper consumption. The RICOH MP C2003 and MP C2503 are Gold certified by the EPEAT green procurement program.

Media handling and image quality
While document functions are packed into a space saving design, the RICOH MP C2003 and MP C2503 let loose with support for a wide range of paper stock and sizes. Choose up to 300 gsm (169 gsm duplex) for media such as postcards, printed envelopes and posters while getting more coverage per print with paper sizes up to SRA3 (12.6 x 17.7 inches).

The RICOH MP C2003 and MP C2503 offer image resolution up to 1,200 dpi with automatic color calibration for superior image quality on the fly. Standard automatic duplexing and a maximum paper capacity of up to 2,300 sheets help further simplify any print job, while optional internal finishing reduces the overall maximum footprint of the device.

Both MFPs are available today. The MP C2003 sells for a manufacturer’s suggested retail price of $6,890, and the MP C2503 sells for an MSRP of $9,330.

Ricoh Americas Corporation will continue to support the ingenuity of young scientists as an important investment in building a sustainable society by honoring high school students this spring at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF). Winners are those students who have developed brilliant innovations for driving environmentally and socially responsible businesses.

Since 2005, Ricoh has recognized 23 students worldwide and from all walks of life with the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award (RSDA), and presented scholarships worth more than $325,000 with the help of a distinguished team of judges from academia and business. Resolving global concerns by creating harmony between business and the environment is one of Ricoh’s founding principles. Therefore, Ricoh established the RSDA to encourage and champion students who share those values to bring about innovations that limit society’s environmental impact.

The company will present its 10th annual RSDA as part of the Special Awards Ceremony at Intel ISEF, which takes place May 11-16 at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Intel ISEF is the world’s largest international pre-college science competition, showcasing more than 1,600 of the world’s leading high school students and their independent scientific research projects. A total of $25,000 in scholarships from Ricoh is distributed among the winning projects and represents one of the top prize amounts in the Special Awards category.

Students can learn more about participating in Intel ISEF by visiting: https://student.societyforscience.org/intel-isef.

Past RSDA winners have come from all over the globe, including India, South Africa, China, and the United States. Pieter Luyt, a 2006 winner from South Africa, said this about his experience winning the RSDA: “From an educational point of view, the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award has aided me in obtaining a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Pretoria. It has also inspired me to promote the idea of sustainability, with emphasis on energy generation, among my peers.” A profile of Pieter’s experience can be viewed here: http://www.ricoh-usa.com/about/environment/environmental_csr_isef.aspx. Profiles of all past winners will be published over the next few months.

Judging for the Ricoh RSDA is based on the following criteria:
• the originality of the project;
• the project’s potential significance regarding its contribution to sustainability;
• the project’s attempt to solve major environmental issues, without damaging the environment or human in its production or use; and
• the project’s connection with the four Ricoh pillars.(1)

“Our corporate sustainability mission is to not only address the environmental issues society is currently facing, but to research and drive new opportunities that create sustainable growth,” said Ron Nielson, West Regional Vice President, Ricoh USA. “Our company’s ongoing support and commitment to the Ricoh Sustainable Development Award really underscores this mission, and we are proud to support this event since it takes place right in our region. The students participating in the RSDA competition are some of the brightest, most innovative thinkers on the topics of sustainability and we are excited to meet some of the competitors in person at our booth this year.”

Ricoh creates value for clients every day by helping them reduce consumption of resources, such as paper (by digitizing information flows) and energy (by creating efficient office equipment). The company also continuously improves the sustainability of its own operations with measures such as:
• sophisticated networks for resource recovery and recycling;
• ambitious greenhouse gas reduction goals;
• ISO 14001-certified manufacturing facilities around the world; and
• zero-waste-to-landfill manufacturing plants.

The Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, a program of Society for Science & the Public, brings students together from approximately 70 countries, regions and territories. Each year, the finalists showcase their independent research as they compete for more than $4 million in awards. The fair encourages millions of students worldwide to explore their passion for innovation and develop solutions for global challenges.

Ricoh Americas Corporation today unveiled three major innovations for mobilizing information in today’s dynamic healthcare environment. Announced at the HIMSS healthcare IT conference in Orlando, the solutions improve the capture, transformation and management of faxes, prescriptions and clinical photography.

Enterprise fax
Sixty-three percent of healthcare providers still use fax to communicate,(1) and more than 4 in 10 respondents admitted to having read a paper fax intended for someone else.(2)

The Ricoh Enterprise Fax Server Solution for Healthcare helps eliminate the efficiency and privacy problems of “old school” fax, including phone line and paper costs, through a new software-based “electronic faxing” solution. The solution automates fax delivery from Ricoh multi-function products (MFPs) and a variety of clinical and back-office applications, organizes faxes for more secure retrieval (including mobile), and integrates fax with electronic health records (EHR) and hospital information management (HIM) platforms, labs, pharmacies and claims-processing systems.

The solution lets healthcare organizations retire standalone fax machines and costly dedicated phone lines. It also helps healthcare organizations comply with new, more stringent privacy protections in the HIPAA final omnibus rule.

Plain-paper Rx
Nearly half of Americans take prescription drugs,(3) and physicians ordered or prescribed 2.6 billion drugs in 2010.(4) To meet CMS rules protecting against copying, modification or counterfeiting, many healthcare organizations are using secure watermarked paper with unique serial numbers and time-consuming chain-of-custody procedures. This approach comes with a steep price: 15 to 25 cents per page for the paper alone, plus more costs for dedicated printers and special ordering and management processes.

The Ricoh Secure Plain Paper Rx Solution for Healthcare offers a more flexible and affordable way to meet CMS mandates. Instead of requiring full chain-of-custody documentation, the software uses microprinting, security feature warning boxes, consecutive numbering and other checks-and-balance features. It eliminates the need for pricey paper, removes reliance on printers with locking drawers, and demands significantly less intervention from the hospital’s human resources staff.

Healthcare camera
Digital photos play a major role in the care of wounds, burns and incisions. Unfortunately, downloading images can be error prone, saved images on the camera can present privacy problems, and most cameras can’t be sterilized.

Ricoh today demoed the G700SE Dynamic Capture camera, designed specifically for these healthcare challenges. It’s a powerful solution for capturing patient images, integrating them with EHRs and documenting patient progress over time. With the G700SE, a clinician uses the digital camera’s built-in barcode scanner to link information – such as images of an injury site – to a patient’s chart. The clinician can then enter any additional metadata such as barcodes, user-defined pick-list items, free typed messages and sound.

When the metadata is complete, the image and data stream wirelessly transmits to the EHR or HIM system through Ricoh’s integration solution, powered by InterSystems software. This workflow helps reduce the need for paper records, exhaustive text descriptions, time-consuming uploads, file associations and manual data entry.

“These three innovations help our customers address a major challenge of our time: more efficiently delivering higher-quality healthcare while ensuring privacy,” said Patrick Braun, Vice President, Healthcare Vertical, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “We look forward to exploring at HIMSS the unique problems that our customers and prospects are facing, and proposing ways we can help.”

Commercial printing businesses can now easily expand into a growing signage and display market with new wide-format color graphics printers from Ricoh Americas Corporation that employ aqueous latex ink – a more environmentally-friendly ink as compared to traditional petroleum-based inks due to its lower levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

The new RICOH Pro L4160 and RICOH Pro L4130 deliver high print productivity and quality as a result of technological innovations, which include the use of Ricoh piezoelectric print heads. These roll-to-roll large format printers handle media sizes up to 63.8 inches (L4160) or 54 inches (L4130) wide, and support up to seven colors in various configurations, including orange, green and white inks in addition to CMYK.

The L4100 series – Ricoh’s first entry into wide-format graphics – is intended to help customers expand their service offerings and increase value to their customers. An additional benefit is that the L4100 series may reduce the environmental impacts of printing through its use of aqueous latex ink and ability to operate with low power consumption. Both printers use standard 100-120v power, eliminating the need for rewiring to 220-240v. Additionally, the RICOH Pro L4160 and RICOH Pro L4130 are designed to help lower energy consumption and costs, and have the ability to use a much broader range of heat sensitive media, which make the L4100 series a smart choice for customers.

The L4100 series’ use of latex ink eliminates the need for special ventilation that traditional wide-format graphics printers require. But more importantly, the prints are quickly ready for finishing after exiting the system, because of a low curing temperature. Employing Ricoh’s latest generation of high quality, stainless steel multiple jetting piezo inkjet heads, up to three different drop sizes are produced at once, with drops as small as four picoliters (pL). Varying drop sizes result in smoother gradations and sharper details, especially with fine lines and small fonts.

Ricoh latex inks offer outdoor durability of one to two years, or two to three years with lamination. With white ink, printers’ clients benefit from brilliant color on all substrates – including transparent and dark materials – for signage, branded materials and window displays. The addition of orange and green extends the color gamut to encompass a wider range of vibrant colors, ideal for both indoor and outdoor materials, and to reproduce corporate colors or spot colors accurately.

The L4100 series quickly and easily create durable outdoor and indoor signage, including banners, POS/POP posters, vehicle wraps and wall coverings. Both systems print on a wide range of substrates, including PVC, tarpaulin, synthetic paper, coated paper, non-coated paper and textiles.

“Our customers are constantly looking at ways to differentiate and increase their market opportunities,” said Tim Vellek, Vice President, Production Printing Business Group, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “The L4100 series can be that stepping stone for customers that want to offer multi-tiered marketing campaigns.”

Analysts predict strong growth in the wide-format printing market. For example, InfoTrends expects the retail value of wide-format printing in North America to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.9 percent, reaching $23.6 billion by 2016 (http://www.prweb.com/releases/2013/6/prweb10828358.htm).

L4100 series features summary

Feb 20 - RICOH VP OF STRATEGIC MARKETING TERRIE CAMPBELL TO PRESENT AT 23RD ANNUAL DYNAMIC WOMEN IN BUSINESS CONFERENCE AT HARVARD BUSINESS SCHOOL
Ricoh Americas Corporation today announced a strategic partnership with InterSystems to develop new information solutions for acute healthcare that can improve workflow, cost-efficiency and ultimately patient care. Both companies will be exhibiting at the upcoming HIMSS 2014 Annual Conference and Exhibition, Feb. 23-27 in Orlando.

InterSystems, a global leader in software for connected care, provides InterSystems HealthShare®, a health informatics platform, which enables strategic interoperability and analytics for action across a hospital network, community, region or nation. The Ricoh partnership with InterSystems will enable interoperable solutions designed to better manage healthcare information.

One solution, which will be demoed at HIMSS next week, will enable clinicians for the first time to photograph a newly admitted patient’s injury and automatically insert the photo into the patient’s electronic health record (EHR) without ever leaving the patient’s bedside. Before taking the picture, the clinician would use the Ricoh Healthcare Camera to scan a barcode on the patient’s wristband and add information to describe the injury. The tags could include user- defined items, such as “laceration” and “left leg,” data the clinician enters directly, and even voice recordings. The photo image and data would then wirelessly attach to the patient’s EHR. This solution would quickly and easily create more complete pictures of patients’ progress, supporting improved outcomes.

“Information gaps are a big problem in healthcare,” said Patrick Braun, Vice President, Healthcare Vertical, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “The ability to dynamically capture unstructured content objects at the point of care, index them, and intelligently structure this information for secure sharing among caregivers truly advances information mobility across the patient care continuum. For many healthcare organizations, unstructured information remains the anti-matter to interoperability and workflow process automation. Through our strategic partnership with InterSystems, we are eliminating silos of disparate data, streamlining workflows and providing innovative solutions making information work for our healthcare customers globally.”

In the photography scenario, InterSystems HealthShare seamlessly integrates the camera, an EHR, and Ricoh technology, employing healthcare industry standards including, but not limited to, Health Level Seven International (HL7), Xtensible Markup Language (XML) and several Integrating Health Enterprise (IHE) profile standards for healthcare information exchange across disparate devices, systems and organizations. HealthShare is IHE-certified for interoperability.

“Ricoh is an innovator in the capture, transformation and management of information, and our technologies working together promise to enable healthcare breakthroughs for our clients,” said Paul Grabscheid, Vice President of Strategic Planning, InterSystems. “We look forward to a long and fruitful partnership that helps clients around the world to capture, share, understand, and act upon real-time healthcare data, combining our strategic interoperability foundation with Ricoh’s innovative technologies and solutions to enable safer, more effective and more efficient care.”

Ricoh will have ongoing demos of the solution at their HIMSS booth #3739 and InterSystems will have demos at their HIMSS booth #2741 on Monday, Feb. 24 at 4:00 p.m.; Tuesday, Feb. 25 at 11:00 a.m.; and Wednesday, Feb. 26 at 10:00 a.m. In addition to InterSystems, strategic Ricoh partners also exhibiting with Ricoh at HIMSS include: Nuance, DocuWare, NSi, OpenText and Access.

Ricoh Americas Corporation today announced it will offer Managed Review Services, reinforcing the company’s eDiscovery services for law firms and corporate counsel seeking to outsource the entire process to a single, highly qualified vendor.

Managed review is the initial review of information, both paper and electronic, that is relevant to pending litigation. With Ricoh’s new Managed Review Services, clients can now come to Ricoh for this and all of their eDiscovery needs rather than introducing potential complications, delays, errors and unnecessary costs by hiring multiple vendors.

Ricoh announced the new service today at LegalTech® New York 2014, the premier conference and trade show for technology in the legal community, where it is exhibiting in Booth # 224/226.

“With attorney review consuming such a large portion of litigation budgets, we’ve carefully developed a service based on best practices in document management and staffing to help meet our clients’ demanding standards,” said Bob Brock, Vice President, Legal and Managed Services, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “Our Managed Review Services help unify eDiscovery, from identification to production, helping make it quick and cost-effective for our clients.”

Ricoh Managed Review Services include:
• A single point of support. Ricoh’s project management team coordinates the project workflow from data capture, data reduction and processing through the managed review.
• Secure review locations. Ricoh provides multiple urban locations across the United States that include all necessary equipment, software training, data security, screening, contract attorneys, review managers and staff oversight.
• Experienced Relativity® Premium Partners. Ricoh blends just-in-time attorney staffing with its review platforms offering and expert consulting to improve first level review results. To reduce time and cost of review, Ricoh employs predictive coding options (clustering, email threading, assisted review) and enhances the Relativity interface to improve metadata tagging and information security.

A key partnership
Ricoh is partnering with Hudson Legal, an acknowledged leader in first level review, to provide the service. The award-winning company offers fully screened contract attorneys, locations around the country, expert project managers, efficient review centers and comprehensive productivity tracking.

Ricoh Managed Review Services are especially agile and flexible. For example, Ricoh orchestrated an emergency project over Thanksgiving weekend last year to respond to an organization’s data breach. The project team reviewed and coded more than 70,000 documents containing personally identifying and private health information on clients, employees and donors. The project was successfully and accurately completed in time for notification of affected parties within aggressive HIPAA Omnibus and IRS reporting windows.

“In any situation, emergency or not, Ricoh, in partnership with Hudson Legal, can provide a quick and cost-effective first level review either separately or as part of a full eDiscovery service offering,” said Brock. “We look forward to continuing to deliver to this high standard.”

Ricoh is one of the largest providers of legal document services in the country, providing a full suite of services for law firms and corporate counsel. Customers include the majority of the AmLaw 200 and NLJ 250 firms, and the legal departments of many Fortune 1000 companies.

Ricoh Americas Corporation today unveiled a new early data analysis service for corporate legal departments combining highly intuitive data culling, a simple user interface, an innovative cost calculator and an affordable, behind-the-firewall method of controlling costs.

Customers deploy the Ricoh Electronic Discovery Insight (REDI) solution within their environment before they ever need it. At the onset of litigation, investigation or regulatory action, they can perform natural language queries and granular culling through a browser-based, intuitive interface. Queries trigger powerful analysis and identification of potentially relevant data, providing valuable insight to reduce data before it is processed and expensive review takes place.

Ricoh announced the new service today at LegalTech® New York 2014, the premier conference and trade show for technology in the legal community, where it is exhibiting in Booth # 224/226.

REDI’s interactive interface allows customers to search and retrieve information by date, keywords, key phrases, file type, custodians and other parameters, refining results with Boolean connectors, in addition to wildcard and proximity searching, without requiring IT support for coding/scripting of complex search algorithms. Users can quickly and easily access very large data sets and identify likely relevant information, enabling them to make appropriate decisions which may have a positive impact on the downstream costs of document review. REDI also provides detailed reports showing analysis results, data volumes involved and projected review costs, among other things – all of which assist the customer in improving litigation strategy and building a defense against overly burdensome discovery requests.

Powerful, yet cost-effective
The REDI service gives customers all the power of permanently installed eDiscovery analysis tools without the capital investment, delays and proprietary lock-ins. It offers seamless integration with other eDiscovery solutions, e.g., hosted review platforms, and eliminates the need for programming knowledge. Employing technology used in some of the most demanding ESI settings, REDI rivals the affordability of tools with a fraction of the power. And unlike software-as-a-service (SaaS) processing tools, REDI helps keep customer data safe and secure behind the company firewall.

“As a full-service provider of eDiscovery services, we listened to our customers and developed a cost-effective solution that pinpoints their relevant information, mitigates their risk, manages their costs and protects their data,” said Bob Brock, Vice President, Legal and Managed Services, Ricoh Americas Corporation. “REDI is a unique combination of simplicity and power, and our customers are eager to look to a partner like Ricoh to provide simple, yet innovative ways to make information work for eDiscovery clients.”
