Deming Award
The Medal
In 1951, the Japanese Union of Scientists (JUSE) developed the Deming Award for
quality control based on his work. The competition for the Medal is severe. Judging
is strict. Companies spend years in preparation before even becoming eligible for
consideration.
The examination process is extremely thorough. The criteria include: corporate policy;
quality systems; education and training; results; and future plans.
Although Deming scoffed at business awards, he regularly attended the award ceremonies
and visited plants to personally congratulate the winners.
